Many people believe that if you have the proper meta tag on your web pages, you will automatically get higher rankings and more traffic. Meta tags are not considered a magic bullet, and do not automatically get your pages higher rankings. That being said, meta tags are an important part of your SEO plan overall.
Meta tags are bits of information that fit in the head of your web page. There are three parts to a meta tag: the title, the short “about” paragraph, and the keywords used on that page. The title is not really a meta tag, but is important since that information can be used to encourage clicks on a search engine results page. Your title should describe your business, be engaging, and encourage clicks to your site.
The meta description tag is that short paragraph that comes up on search engine results pages. This description should be accurate and interesting to your audience. If this paragraph is not formatted properly, then it will not appear as you intended on those pages. A sentence or two is sufficient to give web crawlers a start to what your website is about. Keep in mind that not all of your meta description will appear on search engine results pages, and some include content from your web pages themselves. Even if your meta description does not appear at all, it is worth the time to create this portion of the web page, since it helps in search engine rankings.
The meta keywords tag is probably the least important piece of information in the meta tags. This is because most major search engines ignore the tag, but that does not mean that you should too. Since a few search engines still support this tag, you should be creating it as part of your pages. To use it properly, any keywords listed in the meta keywords tag should also be in the content on that page. If the words do not appear on that page, listing it in the keywords tag will not boost rankings for that keyword. Remember the meta tags and your content work hand in hand.
